Katie graduated cum laude in creative writing at Hollins University, focusing on personal essays and children's poetry, and she majored in business management at The University of Montana.
Katie's mother, grandmother, and great grandmother were all school teachers. In a widespread column Katie penned for her local newspaper during high school, she wrote a thank you letter to teachers everywhere, which began: "Teachers are the unsung heroes of our world.
