I began tinkering with journal techniques in elementary school, eager to find a fun way to capture my stories. I found some success, though it mostly resulted in a shoebox of half-finished diaries.
Later, I graduated cum laude in creative writing at Hollins University, focusing on personal essays and children's poetry, and majored in business management at The University of Montana.
NPR’s StoryCorp invited me to interview my 90-year-old grandma about her life stories.
You know: the kinds of moments we all say we’ll never forget.
Except something went wrong.
My grandma couldn’t remember her favorite stories anymore, and I never got to hear them.
She sighed and said, “I should have written them down, Katie.”
That autumn, I handcrafted my first guided journal, adding writing prompts to get me writing. I put a few extra journals on Etsy and saw them sell that day. I quickly realized I wasn’t alone in wanting introspection and connection. My mission—"Let’s celebrate your story!”—began as positive customer feedback started pouring in. (Thank you!)
My revolutionary approach to storycatching caught the attention of press outlets like Huffington Post, Good Housekeeping, and Pregnancy and Newborn. I received green business awards, retailers picked up my products, and not-for-profits took them on retreats and missions. I even shared my journey in a TEDxTalk and on HGTV’s “You Live in What?”
My greatest dream came true: I became a mom! With my first baby’s arrival (I’ve got four kids now), everything in my work and life shifted. Unable to keep up with business demands, my team and I stopped making handmade journals. I took all my experience and began self-publishing bound journals. To my surprise, both my mother-son and mother-daughter keepsake journals became instant #1 Bestsellers on Amazon—an achievement I could have never imagined!
After the success of my self-published journals (and the arrival of a second baby), I started collaborating with publishers to bring my vision to an even wider audience. This new chapter allowed me to continue creating products that foster connection and storytelling. Alongside my own line of journals, I expanded into new projects, always staying true to my mission of helping families celebrate their stories.
Giving back has always been a key part of my journey. I partner with organizations to donate journals to kids who are victims of domestic violence, offering them a safe space to express themselves and begin healing through writing. This work has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, as I help bring hope and connection to those who need it most.
I've donated hundreds of journals, and I'm not done yet.
I wouldn’t be here without this incredible community. Thank you for trusting me with your stories. My goal is to make ordinary life feel extraordinary, even when your story feels messy—that’s what makes it beautiful!
The love and stories you share inspire me every day. Please keep sharing your moments with #katieclemonsjournals or on my contact page. I’ll keep doing everything I can, for you, our kids, and future generations.
Let’s celebrate your story and build the family bond you’ve always wanted.
